ABSTRACT

Abstract: The objectification theory proposes that experiences of sexualization lead to self-objectification in women: a harmful concern for their appearance at the expense of body states and skills. The research aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Body Objectification Consciousness Scale for female Brazilian university students. The sample was composed by 400 women, aged between 17 and 53 years old (M = 21.65; SD = 5.46), the majority of them were undergraduate psychology students (49%, n = 196). Exploratory (AFE) and confirmatory (AFC) factor analyzes were performed to verify the model's structure. The results supported a structure with 13 items and two dimensions: Body Surveillance and Body Shame, showing good indicators for internal validity and reliability. There were no significant differences between undergraduate psychology students and students from other courses. Future applications of the instrument and possibilities regarding the investigation of self-objectification in different contexts are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Maintenance of snakes at Butantan Institute started in the last century, intending to produce a different antivenom serum to reduce death caused by snakebites. Through a successful campaign coordinated by Vital Brazil, farmers sent venomous snakes to Butantan Institute by the railway lines with no cost. From 1908 to 1962, the snakes were kept in an outdoor serpentarium, where venom extraction was performed every 15 days. During this period, the snake average survival was 15 days. In 1963, the snakes were transferred to an adapted building, currently called Laboratory of Herpetology (LH), to be maintained in an intensive system. Although the periodicity of venom extraction remained the same, animal average survival increased to two months. With the severe serum crisis in 1983, the Ministry of Health financed remodeling for the three public antivenom producers, and with this support, the LH could be improved. Air conditioning and exhausting systems were installed in the rooms, besides the settlement of critical hygienic-sanitary managements to increase the welfare of snakes. In the early 1990s, snake survival was ten months. Over the years to the present day, several improvements have been made in the intensive serpentarium, as the establishment of two quarantines, feeding with thawed rodents, an interval of two months between venom extraction routines, and monitoring of snake health through laboratory tests. With these new protocols, average snake survival increased significantly, being eight years for the genus Bothrops, ten years for genus Crotalus and Lachesis, and four years for the genus Micrurus. Aiming the production of venoms of good quality, respect for good management practices is essential for the maintenance of snakes in captivity. New techniques and efficient management must always be sought to improve animal welfare, the quality of the venom produced, and the safety of those working directly with the venomous snakes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Several plants have been evaluated not only for alone antimicrobial activity, but as resistance-modifying agent. This work is the first on the modulation of antibiotic activity by Lantana camara L. extracts against multiresistant strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial activities of leaf and root ethanol extracts alone or in association with aminoglycosides were determined against bacterial strains by a microdilution test. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts was compared with of the aminoglycosides. Phytochemical prospection revealed the presence of quinones, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids and alkaloids. The results showed antibacterial activities of the extracts and synergistic effects combined with aminoglycosides. The most expressive effects were obtained with root extract but gentamicin or but neomycin against E. coli with MICs decreased (312 to 5 µg mL- 1). The data from this study are indicative of the antibacterial activity of L. camara's extracts and its potential in modifying the resistance of aminoglycosides analyzed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the significance of cellular immune markers, as well as that of collagen and elastic components of the extracellular matrix, within granulomatous structures in biopsies of patients with pulmonary or extrapulmonary sarcoidosis. METHODS: We carried out qualitative and quantitative evaluations of inflammatory cells, collagen fibers, and elastic fibers in granulomatous structures in surgical biopsies of 40 patients with pulmonary and extrapulmonary sarcoidosis using histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry, picrosirius red staining, and Weigert's resorcin-fuchsin staining. RESULTS: The extrapulmonary tissue biopsies presented significantly higher densities of lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils than did the lung tissue biopsies. Pulmonary granulomas showed a significantly higher number of collagen fibers and a lower density of elastic fibers than did extrapulmonary granulomas. The amount of macrophages in the lung samples correlated with FVC (p < 0.05), whereas the amount of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ lymphocytes correlated with the FEV1/FVC ratio and VC. There were inverse correlations between TLC and the CD1a+ cell count (p < 0.05), as well as between DLCO and collagen/elastic fiber density (r = -0.90; p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Immunophenotyping and remodeling both showed differences between pulmonary and extrapulmonary sarcoidosis in terms of the characteristics of the biopsy samples. These differences correlated with the clinical and spirometric data obtained for the patients, suggesting that two different pathways are involved in the mechanism of antigen clearance, which was more effective in the lungs and lymph nodes.

ABSTRACT
